Love At First Sight

When growing up, hormones control most of the way you think. In Tom’s case, he’s finally beginning to notice the female gender and may be kind of over-exaggerating when he says he’s in love with Becky Thatcher, a new girl in town. It was love at first sight he says which could be true but yet the chances are he isn't. People have to get to know each other before they can know if they’re in love and Tom just sees this girl and instantly knows. Some people believe in love at first sight but really when it comes to real emotions it is completely unrealistic.

When in love, I guess people tend to do things unexpected for their “love”. When Becky rips a page in Mr. Dobbins Anatomy book and Tom sees her, he, at first, is willing to let her get lashed for ripping the book but when the teacher gets to her turn, he sees her face and couldn’t bare it. He tells the schoolmaster that he ripped the book and Becky forgives him in an instant. Tom is happy once again and everything is in order, even though he was so cruel to Becky before. Shouldn’t Becky see that Tom is an immature trickster, who is unreliable and thinks only on the spot? No, she only sees the good deeds that Tom might be doing at that moment. Also, Becky and Tom barely know each other. They talk but only to flirt and fight when they do so how can you be in love with someone you barely know?

Tom and Becky may be in love now but when Tom sees another girl when he’s older, he could do the same thing he did to Amy. Dump off Becky without a decent goodbye and go chasing after the new girl like he did with Becky. Tom Sawyer doesn’t think about the future or how he could change. He is always the same, he gets in trouble, a quick stage of kindness then back to the regular Tom. Becky has to realize that Tom won’t ever change but in this book Becky isn’t even experienced or observant enough to comprehend that.
