Brooklyn, from the outside, may seem like an evil, mysterious place but to a local, Brooklyn is home no matter how bad the times are. The people that live there soak in Brooklyn's sorrows, they live in Brooklyn's joys and they advance from the evils to grow stronger. Francie and her family go through the troubles just as the other people that live there do and they grow from them. People discover things about themselves that they never thought they could possibly possess. They find the evils in themselves but they also find the glories that they grasp full on. They find their true selves and even though it may take many pains and loss, they will most likely always come out the person they least expected.
Finding yourself is something everyone has to go through. Some find it hard to accept who they are and some find it easy to get carried away in their own self. There’s the uninspired alcoholic who knows where he’s going and can’t accept it and then there’s the inconsiderate wealthy that care only about themselves. Francie is trying to find a way to get past the wealthy and her unachieved father to become something more than just average. She has the potential and she is strong like her mother but it’s her vulnerability and fear that drags her back to the dark, dingy world she presently lives in. She doubts her abilities when she knows she can perfect them, but that is part of growing up; knowing the possibilities, feeling what the future could hold, fearing failing at her dreams and becoming an outcast. This novel shows us that we can come back from a childhood in a place as poor and disgraceful as the slums of Brooklyn and become someone known and important.
From Innocence to Experience is the hardest part in someone’s life and people have to fight to get through it because if they never get to be experienced, they can never achieve anything they truly dreamed of. People need to have the will and determination to become something better and accept who and what they are otherwise they will get no where in life and end up being ripped to pieces by the world.
